MENHIR
The Menhir Collection is inspired by the shape of the ubiquitous stone carried by Obelix, in the Astérix le Gaulois comic books, written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo.
The mould for these elegant, slip-cast vases is cast from a 3D-printed form that links three tapered ovals, placed one above the other. It has two, generous, almost flat sides that touch at the edges to create a tall, tapering vessel with a graceful, gently undulating form that appears both strong and fragile at the same time.
Hand painted patterns play across the wide flat elevations, linking seamlessly around from one to the other, to create single tessellated motifs that flow around the entirety of each vessel. The patterns and the placement of colours sometimes evoke three-dimensional trompe l’oeil effects, or draw on the discipline of mathematical geometries, or, on some pieces, they reference the pattern-making of Mother Nature herself.
The Menhirs stand 400mm tall and are 200x60mm in plan.
